ASA IR
Student volunteer camps built around sustainable development.
ASA IR is the BIR programme's volunteer club. It runs student-led camps and community projects under the theme of sustainable development, taking what you study about politics and society and putting it to work outside the classroom. The club is now on its sixth camp, ASA IR 6.
The club follows the Thai volunteer-camp tradition of working alongside a host community rather than making a single visit.
What happens at a camp
The work splits into four teams, and most members end up helping with more than one.
| Team | What it does |
|---|---|
| Teaching | Running lessons and activities with the children of the host community |
| Welfare | Cooking and feeding everyone on camp |
| Construction | The building work: floors, gates, fences, playground equipment, painting |
| Relations | Time spent with the host community: learning to weave, walking, sharing the place |
You do not need any special skills for any of these, only time and a willingness to pitch in.
The rest of camp life
Alongside the work there is a sports day, a campfire, volleyball, and a new year celebration.
Camps also have to be paid for. Before each one, members fundraise around Bangkok in university uniform.
How to join

The club's motto is "something cannot be seen by eyes, but by heart".
