Arrival and first week
Getting from the airport to Tha Prachan, and what to set up first.
Last updated: 4 August 2026
From the airport to Tha Prachan
Bangkok has two main airports, Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK). From either, you have a few options into the city:
- Airport rail link and connections: fast and predictable from Suvarnabhumi, but you'll need to connect to reach the old city near Tha Prachan.
- Taxi or ride-hailing app: simplest with luggage. Agree to use the meter (taxis) or confirm the fare in-app before starting.
- Pre-arranged pickup, if your accommodation or a senior student can arrange this.
Tha Prachan itself sits in the old city, near the river, so tell your driver "Thammasat, Tha Prachan campus" rather than just "Thammasat," which has multiple campuses.
What to set up first
In roughly this order:
- Confirm your accommodation and get the keys/access sorted.
- Get a local SIM card so you have data and a Thai number (see Phones and internet).
- Register with TU International Affairs and complete any arrival paperwork they require.
- Open a Thai bank account once you have the necessary documents (see Banking and money).
- Walk the route from your accommodation to campus at least once before your first class.
- Save key numbers: campus security, your programme office, and BIRSA's contact.
Your first week checklist
- Attend orientation sessions run by TU International Affairs and/or BIR.
- Locate your faculty building and where your classes are held.
- Meet your academic advisor or programme coordinator if introduced.
- Join BIRSA's channels for events and updates.
- Identify the nearest pharmacy, hospital, and grocery store to where you live.
- Note your visa's 90-day reporting deadline (see Visa and immigration).
Settling in socially
BIRSA runs welcome events for new students to meet each other, international and home students alike. Check What's on for upcoming dates.
If something goes wrong in week one
TU International Affairs handles visa and enrolment issues. BIRSA can help you find your feet socially and point you to the right office. See Contact BIRSA if you're not sure who to ask.
If anything ever leaves you feeling unsafe, uncomfortable or violated, by anyone, see Safety and emergencies for how to report it.
