Course description

This course explores theoretical and historical backgrounds of East Asia (in particular China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan). It aims to address contemporary trends of the region as well as its relationship between East Asia and extra-regional powers such as the United States and Russia. Given a specific geopolitical context of the rise of China, the course examines dynamics of security and economic challenges and the source of conflict and cooperation of the region which includes, but not limited to, territorial and maritime disputes, the relationship across the Taiwan Strait, the unification of the two Koreas, North Korea nuclear issues, economic contestations and crises, and Asian regionalism.
