Course description

This course provides an advanced understanding of the history of political thoughts on International Relations in the period of the classical European state system. Topics will include areas as follows: theories of the state and the development of the concept of sovereignty; nationalism and national self-determination; international institutions (including international law, international organisation, the balance of power, and diplomacy); war and the use of force (including the evolution of strategic thought, doctrines of intervention); imperialism and the expansion of international society; revolutions and its impact on international relations; and theories of progress and of historical change.
