Internship
How the summer internship works: eligibility, the two forms and their deadlines, the internship schedule, and how the 100 marks are split.

About the internship
The summer internship or training programme opens the opportunity for students to gain first-hand work experience with organisations that are relevant to the field of study. It also allows students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical use.
The internship is credited under the course description PI574 Internship in Politics and International Relations.
When it happens
- Summer session of the third year
- Duration: 8 weeks (June to July)
To earn credit for the internship, you must complete your third-year coursework first.
How to arrange your internship
You find the host organisation yourself. The programme office issues the paperwork once you tell it where you are going.
- Submit the Internship Request Form. This tells the programme which organisation you intend to intern with and requests the documents the programme sends to that organisation.
- Obtain and submit both letters within the deadline. Two documents are required: a letter from the BIR programme to the organisation requesting an internship opportunity on your behalf, and a letter of confirmation from the host organisation back to the BIR programme.
- Submit the Secured Internship Form. This confirms the name of the student who will be interning at the organisation. Hand it in to the office within the deadline.
The host organisation completes the Internship Acceptance Form. Both formats are linked under Forms and downloads below.
You cannot switch organisations freely
Once the organisation has made its decision and issued the letter approving your internship, you cannot change or abort that decision without valid reasons and the programme's approval.
If you intern at a different organisation instead, you are responsible for informing the organisation that approved you of your decision and your reasons. The internship will not be credited and will not be graded.
