The BIR programme
BIR is the international programme of the Faculty of Political Science. Its full name is the Bachelor of Political Science (Politics and International Relations) (International Program). Classes are in English.
Some classes have guest lecturers. The programme includes a field trip and an internship, which is compulsory for cohorts 64 to 67 and optional from cohort 68. See the BIR curriculum and internship.
The Faculty of Political Science
The Faculty was established in 1949. It teaches undergraduate and graduate degrees in Politics and Government, Public Administration, and International Relations. Graduate programmes run full time for regular students and part time for working executives.
Thammasat University
Pridi Banomyong founded Thammasat on 27 June 1934 as the University of Moral and Political Sciences. He wanted to teach the Thai public about democracy, which Thailand had adopted in 1932.
The philosophy of the university is reflected in a speech by Pridi.
"A university is, figuratively, an oasis that quenches the thirst of those who are in pursuit of knowledge. The opportunity to acquire higher education rightly belong to every citizen under the principle of freedom of education."
After the coup of 8 November 1947, the university dropped its open admission system and offered four degrees in Law, Political Science, Economics, and Commerce and Accountancy. The name Thammasat University came with the Thammasat University Act of 1952 (B.E. 2495), which required each programme to award its own degree.
In 2011 staff and students came together to help communities in need, in the spirit of the university motto, "I love Thammasat because Thammasat teaches me to love the people."
