When it happens
The internship is PI574 Internship in Politics and International Relations. It runs for 8 weeks in the summer of Year 3, from June to July. You complete your Year 3 coursework first to earn the credit.
The internship is compulsory for cohorts 64 to 67. For cohorts 68 and 69 (Curriculum 2568), PI574 is a free elective and the internship is optional.
The ID 67 schedule is not yet published
As of 30 September 2026 the BIR programme has published dates only for students with ID 66, whose internship ran from 2 June to 24 July 2026. The form deadlines and calendar for students with ID 67 are not yet published. Check the BIR internship page (opens in a new tab) for the current schedule.
How to arrange your internship
You find the host organisation yourself. The BIR office issues the paperwork once you tell it where you are going.
- Submit the Internship Request Form. It tells the programme which organisation you plan to join and asks it to prepare the documents for that organisation.
- Get two letters and submit them by the deadline. The first is a letter from the BIR programme to the organisation, asking it to take you as an intern. The second is a letter from the organisation to the BIR programme, confirming that it accepts you. The organisation also completes the Internship Acceptance Form.
- Submit the Secured Internship Form to confirm the name of the student joining the organisation. Hand it to the office by the deadline.
Both forms are submitted online, and the current deadlines are on the BIR internship page (opens in a new tab).
You cannot switch organisations freely
Once the organisation has decided and issued its letter, you cannot change or cancel without valid reasons and the programme's approval.
If you intern somewhere else instead, you must tell the organisation that accepted you and give your reasons. The internship will not be credited or graded.
How the internship is graded
The internship is graded S (satisfactory) or U (unsatisfactory). It does not use the grade point scale.
Marking criteria
The internship is marked out of 100, split evenly between the programme and your workplace supervisor.
| Marked by | Component | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| BIR (50) | Internship supervision (focus group or Zoom) | 5 |
| BIR (50) | Internship report | 45 |
| Your supervisor (50) | First evaluation | 20 |
| Your supervisor (50) | Final evaluation | 30 |
If the first evaluation is below 10 marks, the lecturer in charge meets you and your supervisor to discuss your responsibilities and performance.
Internship report
The report is worth 45 marks.
- Length is 12 to 15 pages, not counting tables, charts and pictures.
- Font is Times New Roman 12 point, single spaced.
It covers four things.
- The organisation's structure, objectives and tasks
- A weekly journal
- A self-assessment of what you gained, your strengths and your weaknesses
