Renting a private room
- The deposit is usually 1 to 2 months of rent. The first month is paid in advance.
- Ask for the price per unit of electricity and water, and whether each room has its own meter. Landlords set these rates, and some charge more than the utility does.
- Ask for the lease length and what it costs to leave early. Get the terms in writing.
- Never pay a deposit before you have seen the room in person.
- Keep a receipt for every payment.

TM30 for international students
Your landlord must file TM30 with immigration within 24 hours of your arrival at each address. Ask for the receipt. You need it for a visa extension and often for the 90-day report. See Visa rules while you study.
