Four things keep an ED visa valid. Report your address every 90 days, make sure your landlord files TM30, get a re-entry permit before you leave Thailand, and extend the visa before it ends.
Check fees with the Immigration Bureau
Fees, forms and the reporting window come from the BIR office and from secondary sources. They change. Check immigration.go.th (opens in a new tab) before you go. The BIR office can also advise, but only the Immigration Bureau decides.
90-day report
If you stay in Thailand, report your address to immigration every 90 days. Report online at tm47.immigration.go.th (opens in a new tab) or in person at an immigration office. Secondary sources give the filing window as 15 days before to 7 days after your due date. Count from the day you entered Thailand, then from the date on your last report.
A late report carries a fine, currently 2,000 to 5,000 baht. Set a reminder well before the date.
TM30
Your landlord or accommodation provider must tell immigration about your address within 24 hours of your arrival at each address. This is form TM30. Ask for the receipt and keep it. You need it for a visa extension and often for the 90-day report. Do it again if you move.
Re-entry permit
Plan on a re-entry permit whenever you travel. Get it before you leave Thailand, or your visa is cancelled when you go. Apply at an immigration office, or at the airport before you leave.
- A single re-entry permit is currently 1,000 baht.
- A multiple re-entry permit is currently 3,800 baht.
Choose the multiple permit if you plan to travel three or more times. An ED Plus visa removes the need for one, but Thammasat does not appear to issue it. See getting your student visa.
Extend your visa
The extension is currently 1,900 baht and allows up to one year. In Bangkok you apply at the Immigration Bureau, Government Complex, Chaeng Watthana Road. Check whether you must book an appointment on the Bangkok immigration website.
- Ask the BIR office for the student verification letter at least one month before your visa ends. The BIR office issues it, not the university's international office.
- Collect your documents.
- Passport and a copy
- Forms TM.7 and TM.2
- A photo, 4 by 6 cm
- The BIR letter
- Your TM30 receipt and your latest 90-day report slip
- Your transcript or course registration
- Apply and pay the fee.
The BIR office publishes its own list. Ask for the current version, because the Immigration Bureau can change the requirements.
Exchange students ask the exchange coordinator at oiapolsc@tu.ac.th or 02-221-6111 ext. 3403.
Work
You cannot work on an ED visa without a work permit. This includes casual and paid online work for a Thai employer. Working without a permit is an offence and can lead to a fine and deportation. If your internship is paid or counts as work, ask the BIR office before you start.
Overstay
Staying past the date on your permission costs 500 baht a day, up to 20,000 baht. Longer overstays can lead to an entry ban. Ask the BIR office early if anything is delayed.
