What counts as plagiarism

Plagiarism is using material from published or unpublished work without acknowledging the author. It applies whether or not you meant to do it.

These count as plagiarism, and other acts can too.

  • Copying someone else's work, in whole or in part, without a proper reference.
  • Copying a classmate's work, even with their permission.
  • Using statistics or tables without naming the original source.
  • Summarising or paraphrasing someone else's work, ideas or arguments without naming the source.
  • Submitting one piece of work for two or more courses.

Penalties

The course lecturer decides the penalty. You can fail the course. The University can also apply disciplinary penalties.

Referencing

Reference all assessed work. You can use any recognised referencing system, such as the Harvard system, as long as you use it correctly and consistently throughout the piece. Ask your lecturer which system the course expects.

AI tools

Each course sets its own rule on AI tools. Read the syllabus or ask the lecturer before you use them.

Checking your work

The TU library offers two free checks before you submit.

  • Turnitin checks your own articles, research and theses for plagiarism.
  • AI Tools Services checks your writing for AI use and for plagiarism.

See Libraries, printing and English tests for the library services.
